What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is an oral device that literally “bridges the gap” of a missing tooth. Typically, a dental bridge is made of two or more crowns which are installed onto teeth that surround missing teeth. These crowns serve as anchoring points for the bridge and are referred to as the abutment teeth. In between the abutment teeth is either one or more pontic teeth - a manufactured artificial tooth. There are a few varieties of dental bridges available, these include traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bond bridges. At Pro Grace dental clinic in Calgary NW, our dentists are highly experienced with varying types of dental bridges and dental bridge procedures.

Traditional bridges

A traditional bridge is very similar to the bridge as explained above. A traditional bridge consists of a crown or sometimes an implant for both teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Between these abutment teeth is a pontic tooth that has been designed and handcrafted to match and look just like your natural teeth.

Cantilever bridges

A cantilever bridge is a bridge that is employed when there is only one useable tooth adjacent to the missing tooth. Cantilever bridges are only used under special circumstances as they can but a lot of stress on the anchoring tooth.

Resin-bonded bridges

This bridge uses wings that are bonded to existing teeth. These bridges can be made of a porcelain framework or metal.

Top 5 benefits of a dental bridge

  1. Improves chewing

  2. Enhances speaking

Tooth loss can affect your speech, including but not limited to lisps and other speech impediments. A dental bridge can help resolve this issue by allowing you to form words naturally and without adjustment with the feel and look of a natural set of teeth.

  3. Prevents shifting

Teeth have a tendency to shift around throughout our lifetime, that is why many children and adults will have some sort of orthodontic procedure performed to correct or prevent shifting. When you have missing teeth, the chance of shifting is also increased as the surrounding teeth have more room to move. A bridge will support the surrounding teeth and help prevent further shifting.

  4. Repairs your smile

A dental bridge can restore your smile, helping you feel more comfortable and confident with your teeth.

  5. Long term solution

On average a dental bridge that is well taken care of can last for at least 5-15 years. By maintaining your personal hygiene routine and the care of your bridge it can last even longer!
