Your gum line shapes how your smile looks. Gums that cover too much tooth, sit unevenly, or ride higher on one side can make a smile look unbalanced. Gum contouring reshapes that tissue. At Pro Grace Dentistry in NW Calgary, we reshape gum tissue to reveal more of your natural tooth structure and create a more even, proportional smile.
Gum contouring, also called gum reshaping or tissue sculpting, adjusts the shape and position of the gum line. We remove small amounts of excess gum tissue, or refine uneven edges, to expose more of the natural tooth. It is used to address a gummy smile, an uneven gum line, and excess tissue coverage. Many cases are completed in one visit. Larger cases, or cases that also require bone recontouring, may need more than one appointment.
These are the patterns we see most often at consultation.
A reshaped gum line changes how the smile reads, and it can make daily cleaning easier.
Five steps, from first visit to follow-up.
We examine your gum line, your teeth, and how your smile sits in your face. We talk through what you want to change, then explain which changes suit your features and the natural shape of your teeth.
We map the exact amount of tissue to reshape and mark the new gum line before treatment starts. You see the plan before anything is done.
We apply a local anesthetic to the gums before the procedure begins. This is the step that keeps you comfortable while we work.
Using a laser or a dental scalpel, we remove excess tissue and refine uneven edges along the gum line. Where the underlying bone sits too high, bone recontouring may also be needed for a stable result. We would discuss this with you at the planning stage.
Gum tissue typically settles over one to two weeks. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Mild soreness in the first few days is common and usually fades quickly.
Pro Grace Dentistry voluntarily follows the Alberta Dental Fee Guide. The guide is published each year by the Alberta Dental Association and sets suggested fees for every treatment code in the province, so you can check what you are being charged against a public reference.
The fee for gum contouring depends on how much tissue is reshaped and how many teeth are treated. We don’t quote a price online because a number without an examination behind it is a guess. You get an itemized treatment plan at your consultation with the exact fee before you agree to anything.
If your treatment involves more than gum contouring, for example veneers or bonding planned in the same sequence, those fees are set out separately on the same plan.
Gum contouring done purely to change the look of a smile is treated as a cosmetic procedure, and most dental plans don’t cover cosmetic work. Where reshaping also addresses a functional or periodontal problem, part of the treatment may be eligible. We review your plan with you before you commit to anything.
We bill your insurance provider directly where your plan allows it. Financing options are available for treatment that is not covered. Ask our front desk for current terms.
We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) at our clinic. CDCP does not fund treatment carried out for cosmetic purposes, so gum contouring on its own would not normally be claimable. Bring your coverage details to your consultation, and we will tell you where you stand before treatment is booked.
Our office is in-network with all major insurance providers. Please bring your insurance card to each appointment so we can make sure your information is as up-to-date as possible. If you do not find your insurance provider here; please call at 403-288-8080 for clarity.

Care in the first two weeks does most of the work.
Your gum line affects how the whole smile reads. If yours sits unevenly or covers more tooth than you want, a consultation is the place to find out what is possible and what it would cost.
Call 403-288-8080 or book your consultation online. We are at 3630 Brentwood Rd NW #233, Calgary, AB T2L 2C1, and we see patients seven days a week.
We numb the gums with a local anesthetic before treatment begins, so most patients feel little during the procedure itself. Mild soreness or sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles within a few days with normal aftercare.
Most sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much tissue is being reshaped and how many teeth are treated. A full gum line, or a case that also involves bone recontouring, takes longer.
Results are long lasting. Reshaped gum tissue does not usually return to its previous position, though some rebound is possible depending on the case and on whether the underlying bone was recontoured. Regular brushing, flossing, and checkups help protect the result.
It is one of the main treatments used for a gummy smile. Removing excess tissue reveals more of the natural tooth and creates a more even relationship between teeth and gums. Some gummy smiles are caused by the position of the jaw or the lip rather than the gum tissue, and those cases need a different approach. We check which pattern you have at your consultation.
