How to Maintain Oral Health Between Teeth Cleanings: Tips and Strategies

April 12th, 2023

Teeth Cleaning

A healthy mouth and teeth make it easier for you to eat well and enjoy food. As you age, several problems can affect the health of your mouth, but good oral hygiene can help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Regular teeth cleanings are crucial, but practicing good oral hygiene habits between cleanings is just as important. Pro Grace Dentistry is here to provide you with tips and strategies to help you maintain oral health between teeth cleanings.

Brushing Your Teeth Between Cleanings

Before, between, and after teeth cleaning, brushing for at least two minutes twice daily using fluoride toothpaste is recommended. Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the fronts, backs, and chewing surfaces. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace it every three to four months.

You should also be flossing regularly. These practices and eating a well-balanced diet will reduce the chances of gum disease.

Flossing

Between teeth cleanings, it is recommended that you floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach.

Use a gentle back-and-forth motion to slide the floss between your teeth and under your gum line, and don’t forget to rinse after you floss!

Avoid Sugar and Acidic Foods & Drinks

During a teeth cleaning session with your dentist, they’ll likely remind you that sugary and acidic foods and drinks can erode your tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay. Try to limit your consumption of the following:

  • Candies
  • Citrus flavourings such as lemon, orange and lime
  • Soda
  • Alcohol
  • Potato Chips
  • Dried fruits

You may also want to avoid foods that can get trapped under your dentures, like crunchy granola bars or nuts. These small crunchy foods can be hurtful to your gums.

Let’s Talk About Your Smile

Following these tips and strategies lets you keep your teeth and gums healthy between cleanings.

But last but not least, you should visit your dentist regularly for teeth cleaning! Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Your dentist can also identify any potential dental problems and recommend treatment options.
